A 24-year-old Republican candidate for secretary of state in Missouri is facing backlash for campaigning on an anti-LGBTQ platform. She posted a video of herself burning LGBTQ books and promising to eradicate any mention of LGBTQ identity from schools and libraries.
This is what I will do to the grooming books when I become secretary of state... These books come from a Missouri public library. When I'm in office, they will burn.
The video has reached 2.3 million viewers and Twitter has restricted its visibility due to potential violation of rules against Hateful Conduct. The candidate's priorities listed on her website include 'protecting children against the transgender agenda' and 'protecting sports-there's only 2 genders.'
Gomez, who's one of four Republican candidates for Missouri secretary of state per Ballotpedia, seems to think the role would give her the power to ban (torch...?) books and push an extremist anti-LGBTQ agenda in schools and libraries.
