Jane Austen, born in December 1775, was relatively unknown during her lifetime. Today, she is celebrated as one of Britain's most beloved writers, with her portrayal on UK currency. To mark the 250th anniversary of her birth, events across Britain include Georgian costume balls celebrating period dancing. At one such ball in St Albans, guests wore 17th Century attire while participating in dances reminiscent of those depicted in Austen's novels. Dance teacher Libby Curzon leads these sessions, emphasizing the romantic and social aspects of dancing in Austen's time.
"They wouldn't have had somebody like me telling them what to do on the night. They would have all been expected to know what to do, and it would have been really shocking if you made a mistake during the dance."
"It's not like taking a look at them and swiping left or right. You've actually got to move with them, hold hands, work out how to do the dance and give eye contact."
