"Seeking Sexual Freedom is about rediscovering the rites of passage across African cultures that Nana believes can build new models of sexual freedom. In the book, she asks: Are our Indigenous religions more expansive than the Abrahamic faiths we predominantly practise today? Can we go back to the best of our traditional practices, and use that knowledge as a foundation?"
"Nana, as is her strength, spent years speaking with women across the continent and the diaspora to unearth the customs that have either been forgotten or simply not talked about enough."
Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah's new book explores how African rites of passage and rituals can establish new models of sexual freedom and education. Through extensive research across the continent and diaspora, Sekyiamah examines whether Indigenous African religions provided more expansive approaches to sexuality than predominant Abrahamic faiths. The work investigates forgotten or underexplored cultural customs and traditions that historically guided young people through sexual maturation. Specific examples include Ghana's Dipo ceremony, which marks girls' transition to womanhood through elaborate rituals involving beading, head shaving, and community participation. Sekyiamah argues for reclaiming the best traditional practices as foundational knowledge for contemporary sexual freedom and education.
