Books about vampire sheep and unusual jobs shortlisted for children's prize
Briefly

The Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2024 has announced the shortlisted books across three categories: illustrated books, books for younger readers, and books for older readers. Each category has six books competing for the title, and the winners of each category will then compete for the overall title of the Waterstones Children's Book Prize Winner 2024. The shortlist includes books like 'Incredible Jobs You've (Probably) Never Heard Of' praised for being highly original and filled with inventive detail, 'The Secret Elephant,' a true story about a wartime friendship between a zookeeper and a baby elephant, 'The Beasts Of Knobbly Bottom: Attack of the Vampire Sheep!' which follows two young heroes saving the world from bloodsucking ruminants, and 'Girl, Goddess, Queen' that retells the story of Persephone in a mix of a coming-of-age story and rom-com.
Bea Carvalho, head of books at Waterstones, said: 'For 20 years the Waterstones Children's Book Prize has been a highlight of our bookselling calendar: through it, we have discovered some of the most exciting children's authors and illustrators at work today.'
