Beatriz Nascimento's Histories of Afro-Brazilian Rebellion
Briefly

The narrative around Black peoples has often been limited to their histories of trauma and fragmentation. Beatriz Nascimento, a prominent Brazilian scholar and activist, sought to change this perception by chronicling the rich and resilient histories of Black Brazilians. Her translated writings in "The Dialectic Is in the Sea" shed light on her holistic approach to history that incorporates political, economic, spiritual, and cultural dimensions. Nascimento emphasized the importance of continuity in the experiences of formerly enslaved individuals, aiming to connect the past struggles with present realities in Brazil.
I don't want to just narrate the events of the past, but to establish the continuity between the past and present of black people in Brazil.
Her project was to recover the wholeness that was interrupted and effaced by Euro-American historical documentation, providing a corrective to being enslaved by its fragmentary approach.
