Kij Johnson's upcoming tabletop RPG RiverBank features anthropomorphic animals and whimsical storytelling, stepping outside the traditional fantasy realm of orcs and humans. Inspired by his sequel to The Wind in the Willows, the game involves conflict and humor without fatal consequences. Crime, rivalry, or even comical disputes are possible, creating a cozy environment for players. The game utilizes specialized dice and accommodates three to five players, emphasizing emergent narrative and the charm of woodland creatures. The illustrated aesthetic, by Kathleen Jennings, enhances the game's unique feel and connection to nature.
Animals are in almost every story I have written. I guess it makes sense that, if I was going to write a game, it would also have animals at its center.
I designed RiverBank with friction and chaos in mind, all the ways that things go wrong with our plans and intentions.
For many of the animals of the River Bank, death would be preferable to being dragged away from your friends to escort your awful great-uncle to a spa for his health.
It's a cozy world, and a foe interaction probably isn't going to end up with anyone dead.
