Senator Chris Van Hollen recently visited El Salvador to support Kilmar Abrego García, a Maryland man who was transferred to a mega-prison due to an alleged administrative error. Van Hollen's advocacy centers on ensuring García's constitutional rights are upheld, stressing the broader implications for civil rights if one individual is denied. Accompanying him, four additional Democratic lawmakers are now in El Salvador to exert further pressure for García's release, highlighting political solidarity on an issue involving potential violations of international law concerning García's detention.
"We will keep fighting for his constitutional rights, because if we deny the constitutional rights for one person, we threaten them for everybody," says Van Hollen.
Abrego Garcia's wife Jennifer celebrated the meeting, saying in a statement, 'My children and my prayers have been answered.'
Senator Van Hollen traveled to El Salvador last Wednesday in a push for Abrego Garcia's release but had initially been barred from having any contact with him.
Four more Democratic lawmakers, including Congressmembers Maxwell Alejandro Frost of Florida and Yassamin Ansari of Arizona, have since traveled to El Salvador to continue pressuring for Abrego Garcia's release.
