UCLA has indefinitely suspended the Students for Justice in Palestine organizations after a protest that involved vandalism and threats against a University Regent's wife. The decision followed a campuswide safety commitment expressed by Chancellor Julio Frenk, emphasizing the need for a safe environment for learning and teaching. This action aligns with broader zero-tolerance policies adopted by University of California campuses due to violent protests and misconduct. As a result, the suspended groups will lose access to meeting spaces, funding, and official university affiliation during the ongoing judicial procedures.
Without the basic feeling of safety, humans cannot learn, teach, work and live - much less thrive and flourish. This is true no matter what group you are a member of - or which identities you hold.
The decision by the UCLA Office of Student Conduct was an interim suspension while internal judicial procedures over the groups took place, and the conduct proceedings and suspensions have no end date.
UCLA joins several other UCs and other campuses throughout the country that have banned or suspended SJP following incidents that violated the universities' code of conduct.
The UC adopted "zero-tolerance" policies for code of conduct violations after unrest during spring 2024, which included vandalism and violence surrounding pro-Palestinian protests.
