RSF escalates attacks on Sudan's famine-stricken Zamzam refugee camp
Briefly

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have increased their assaults on the Zamzam refugee camp in North Darfur, reportedly killing at least seven people this week alone. This comes amid the RSF's effort to tighten its hold on Darfur, while contending with losses to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in Khartoum. The RSF surrounds the camp, alleging it serves as a base for allied rebel forces. Conditions for the 500,000 residents worsen, with many resorting to hiding underground to escape violence, prompting international calls for an end to hostilities.
The RSF has been besieging the area for months, claiming that the camp is a base for the Joint Forces, former rebel groups now fighting alongside the army. Some camp residents have burrowed holes into the ground for shelter and protection, fearing constant attacks.
Residents and medics reported RSF attacked the camp, which it surrounded three times within a week. At least seven people were killed in the camp this week.
The paramilitary group, RSF, is tightening its grip on its Darfur stronghold, losing ground to the Sudanese Armed Forces in the capital, Khartoum.
The United Nations has urged the warring parties to stop the violence, highlighting the use of heavy weaponry in the renewed fighting gripping Zamzam and its surrounding areas.
