Protests erupted in Kenya following the suspicious death of 31-year-old blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody. Ojwang, arrested for criticizing Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, was transported over 200 miles before dying just hours later. Initial police claims of accidental injury contradicted autopsy results revealing torture. His death sparked widespread protests, as crowds chanted for justice and accountability from the police, reflecting deep-seated distrust and anger. The protests have led to one arrest of an involved officer, with more anticipated by watchdog authorities amid calls for systemic reform.
Dr. Bernard Midia, one of the pathologists who examined Ojwang's body, said the cause of death is very clear; head injury, neck compression, and other injuries spread all over the body point towards assault.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority indicated that more arrests are imminent, highlighting the systemic failures and corruption within the police force that led to Ojwang’s death.
