The Portland police chief publicly acknowledged the department's misinformation regarding a 2022 deadly shooting at a protest, where victims were misrepresented as armed. A visual investigation revealed that these victims were unarmed traffic-safety volunteers attempting to de-escalate a situation. Chief Bob Day apologized for the department's role in amplifying public pain and confusion, noting the misunderstanding persisted even after evidence was reviewed in court. This acknowledgment highlights issues surrounding police communication and transparency in critical situations, particularly during social protests.
I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the incredible pain and trauma this tragedy has caused, Day said. In addition, I want to recognize the role the Portland police bureau played in exacerbating that pain.
We did not clarify that this was an unprovoked attack on an innocent group, Day said. We understand the harm that has been done by our lack of transparency.
