Panama and China push back against Trump's canal threats
Briefly

In response to President Trump's controversial claims about the Panama Canal, President Jose Raul Mulino of Panama clarified that the canal was not a gift from the US but rightfully belongs to Panama. This statement was made during a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Trump's remarks about potentially reclaiming control over the canal were met with formal complaints to the UN from Panama and a claim from China affirming non-involvement in canal operations, reinforcing Panama's ownership and sovereignty over the strategic waterway.
We reject in its entirety everything that Mr Trump has said, Mulino said during a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Panama made a formal complaint to the United Nations, referring to an article of the UN Charter precluding any member from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of another.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing said, China does not participate in the management and operation of the canal and has never interfered in the affairs.
