Organizers say ship carrying aid for Gaza hit by drones near Malta
Briefly

Organizers of a humanitarian aid flotilla reported their ship, Conscience, was attacked by armed drones off Malta, igniting a fire and damaging its hull. Volunteer Surya McEwen noted that the drones appeared to target the ship's generators, leaving the ship vulnerable. The Maltese government confirmed it received a Mayday call and sent assistance. Footage from the scene showed smoke and explosions, while no casualties were reported. UN rapporteur Francesca Albanese shared a call for help from the flotilla, highlighting the precarious situation.
"Armed drones attacked the front of an unarmed civilian vessel twice, causing a fire and a substantial breach in the hull," the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said.
Surya McEwen stated that the Conscience was struck shortly after midnight local time by what looked like missiles from two drones aiming at the ship's generators.
The Maltese government confirmed receiving a Mayday call from Conscience at 12:20 a.m., reporting a fire on its bow, after which a tug provided support.
Francesca Albanese, the U.N. special rapporteur, expressed concern by sharing that she received 'a distressed call' from the flotilla during the incident.
