Hamdan Ballal, co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, was released after being detained in Kiryat Arba, West Bank. He emerged with visible injuries and denied accusations of stone-throwing against a settler. Residents reported that settlers attacked their village, with soldiers allegedly supporting the attackers. Ballal’s wife witnessed part of the assault on him, and his collaborator described the situation as a lynching. After his Oscar win, concerns are raised regarding increased violence against Palestinians, particularly targeting those in the film industry.
On Monday, the Israeli military confirmed it had taken custody of three Palestinians suspected of throwing stones at their forces and one Israeli civilian involved in a "violent confrontation."
Lamia recalled seeing three uniformed men beating her husband with their rifle butts and another person in civilian clothing who appeared to be filming the attack.
"Of course, after the Oscar, they have come to attack us more," she said. "I felt afraid."
Yuval Abraham wrote that "a group of settlers just lynched" Ballal. He continued, "They beat him and he has injuries in his head and stomach, bleeding."
