Over 4,000 prisoners escaped from Munzenze prison as security guards abandoned their posts amid chaos. Reports indicate horrendous violence against female inmates, including rape and murder. Following the escapes, fears have arisen about potential retaliatory actions from released prisoners against their victims. Observers warn of the dangers posed by inmates seeking vengeance, contributing to public fear and instability in the region.
When they manage to get out of prison, they go off to seek revenge. This is a danger, he said.
As mayhem ensued during the approach and entry of M23 into areas of eastern DRC, security guards assigned to keep prisons secure abandoned their positions.
More than 4,000 prisoners escaped from Munzenze prison in Goma on the night of 27 January as M23 entered the city.
