Personal care products aimed at Black women, especially chemical hair straighteners, are under scrutiny for their toxicity. In reaction, many are opting for natural hairstyles, like braids. However, a study by Consumer Reports has revealed that synthetic braiding hair contains dangerous substances including carcinogens and heavy metals. Tested brands showed exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are linked to serious health issues. Concern extends beyond installation, as small pieces can break off and be ingested, potentially surpassing safe exposure limits for harmful materials like lead.
Exposure to VOCs from synthetic braiding hair can cause respiratory issues, nausea, and fatigue, with long-term exposure linked to increased cancer risk and organ damage.
Popular brands of synthetic braiding hair tested by Consumer Reports contained carcinogens and heavy metals, raising alarms about the safety of these products for Black women.
