Key Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt reopening for medical evacuations
Briefly

The European Union has restarted its monitoring mission at the Rafah border crossing, which was closed to human traffic since May 2024 due to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The crossing will reopen specifically for medical evacuations, allowing 50 injured civilians and 50 Hamas fighters, accompanied by escorts, to enter Egypt. The mission aims to support the Palestinian Authority and coordinate with the World Health Organization for the transportation of patients, as thousands are awaiting evacuation due to urgent health needs.
Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, stated that the EU's civilian border mission now supports the Rafah crossing by coordinating with both Palestinian and Israeli authorities. This collaboration aims to facilitate the evacuation of individuals needing medical care.
With about 12,000-14,000 patients waiting for evacuation, Gaza's Health Ministry confirmed the reopening of the Rafah crossing for critical medical transfers, prioritizing the most urgently injured civilians and Hamas fighters.
