Nearly 15 years after the death of Anastasio Hernández Rojas, an international human rights commission ruled that U.S. border officials were responsible for his death and for torturing him during his deportation in 2010. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights called for a reopening of the criminal investigation into the case, marking the first time it addressed a law enforcement killing on U.S. soil. Maria Puga, Rojas' wife, expressed her hope for truth and accountability for the involved officials, including questions raised about Customs and Border Protection commissioner Rodney Scott.
Officials beat and shocked Hernández Rojas with a Taser while they were deporting him to Mexico through the San Diego border in May 2010. He was hospitalized and died a couple of days later.
I am at peace, waiting to see what the government does with what's being ordered. What we want is 'Here is the truth. This is what happened,' said Hernández Rojas' wife, Maria Puga, in Spanish.
