The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza for the fourth time since October 2023.
The remaining UNSC's 14 members voted in favour of the latest resolution aimed at ending the war in Gaza, which has killed over 44,000 Palestinians and caused extensive destruction.
Only four of the 14 resolutions proposed over nearly 14 months of war on Gaza have passed, highlighting the challenges of gaining consensus in the UNSC.
The five permanent members of the UNSC, known as P5, possess veto power, allowing any of them to block resolutions, regardless of support from the other members.
