The UK, France, and Germany have expressed deep concern over Israel's recent legislation that bans contact between its officials and the UN humanitarian agency, UNRWA. The law threatens UNRWA's long-standing efforts to provide vital aid to nearly six million Palestinian refugees amidst ongoing conflict, particularly in Gaza. UNRWA officials have warned that the agency's ability to deliver humanitarian supplies is at risk, which could jeopardize the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Both UNRWA and international allies urge Israel to cooperate with the international community to continue aid operations.
"If UNRWA is not allowed to continue to bring and distribute supplies, then the fate of this very fragile ceasefire is going to be at risk and jeopardy."
"We urge the government of Israel to work with international partners, including the UN, to ensure continuity of operations," a joint statement from the UK, France, and Germany asserted.
"UNRWA has 5,000 staff still working in Gaza," indicated spokesperson Jonathan Fowler, highlighting the organization's ongoing humanitarian efforts amid significant challenges.
"The organization is now operating in a nightmare scenario," admitted UNRWA spokesperson Jonathan Fowler regarding the impact of recent Israeli legislation on their activities.
