Five men no longer suspects in killing of Quran burner in Sweden
Briefly

Five men arrested in connection with the murder of Salwan Momika, who gained notoriety for burning copies of the Quran in 2023, have been released as suspects. Momika was fatally shot shortly before a court ruling on charges against him for inciting ethnic hatred. Despite police investigations and the arrest of these men, no formal suspects have been identified. The incident escalated tensions between Sweden and several Middle Eastern countries, drawing protests and raising security concerns. Political leaders expressed strong condemnation and highlighted threats to democracy and potential foreign links.
"We have a fairly good idea of how events unfolded but no one is currently in custody or a formal suspect," prosecutor Rasmus Oman said. "We are working broadly and I can't go into which leads we are following."
Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch called Momika's murder "a threat to our free democracy," highlighting the implications for civil liberties and government responsibility.
After Momika's murder, the Stockholm court postponed its ruling for several days and ultimately convicted co-defendant Salwan Najem of inciting ethnic hatred.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson indicated that there is "a risk that there is also a link to a foreign power," suggesting potential international ramifications.
