Karla Sofía Gascón, the first out trans actress nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Emilia Pérez, has faced backlash following the resurfacing of offensive tweets. These tweets include anti-Islamic remarks and racially insensitive comments, including derogatory remarks about George Floyd. Journalist Sarah Hagi highlighted their volume, stating numerous tweets span several years, and expressed disbelief over their existence despite Gascón's Oscar nomination. Gascón has since deleted many posts, but some offensive statements remain online, causing significant public scrutiny as she navigates her newfound fame.
"Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected... but only if she behaves. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY," Gascón wrote in Spanish.
"This isn't even all of them... I'm not exaggerating when I say there are so many Tweets spanning years," stated journalist Sarah Hagi.
"His death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider Black people to be monkeys without rights..." Gascón wrote.
