White was the first Black union steward at Canadian National Railway and later became the first elected Black representative for Ironworkers Local 721 in Toronto.
A new foreman's actions led to White's termination, sparking a major labor disruption with the crew stopping work in solidarity, claiming racial discrimination. The dispute ended when White was rehired after over two weeks.
