Professor Nathan Phillips at Boston University began a hunger strike after the university repeatedly removed political signs from his office window, including one advocating for a Tufts graduate student arrested by ICE. This protest aims to highlight the selective removal of political speech on campus and calls for the release of several students detained by ICE. Phillips views these actions as violations of free speech and hopes to spark a dialogue about students' rights to display political messages. He continues the strike to bring attention to these significant issues affecting university students.
As Phillips stated, “It’s a suppression of freedom of speech about an issue that I think should be shouted from the rooftops - unlawful, unconstitutional abductions of university students.”
He expressed his intent to continue advocating for students’ rights, adding, “I’m calling for the immediate release of Rumeysa Öztürk, Mohsen Mahdawi, and Mahmoud Khalil.”
