Wayne Lucas, a Black teenager from Boston, recalls attending the 1965 Freedom Rally where Martin Luther King Jr. addressed issues of segregation and poverty. Sixty years later, Lucas joined a similar gathering at Boston Common, calling for ongoing activism against the same injustices. Keynote speaker Martin Luther King III emphasized the persistence of racism and the need for increased efforts toward equality. The event drew several hundred attendees and included a march along the original route, reminding participants of the enduring struggle for racial equity and community building.
As a Black teenager growing up in Boston, Wayne Lucas vividly remembers joining about 20,000 people to hear the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. speak out against the city's segregated school system and the entrenched poverty in poor communities.
We must quadruple our efforts to create a more just and humane society,
