This program offers $15,000 scholarships to minority law students, but the Alliance claims it is discriminatory and illegal. They argue that the criteria exclude white applicants, regardless of their financial need. The lawsuit raises questions about the complexity of ethnic identity and the legality of programs designed to promote diversity in legal education, emphasizing that all individuals should have equal access to opportunities regardless of race.
This blatant discrimination is not only unbecoming of an association of lawyers, but it's also illegal, the complaint said.
While the complaint makes the claim that 'the ABA would not give the scholarship to a white student, no matter how badly that student needed financial assistance,' there are many ways that an applicant could shoehorn themselves in to the running for the $15k.
