The police chief expressed deep sorrow at the news, highlighting Riveros's dedication to service. Witnesses noted the chaotic scene and expressed gratitude for their own safety amidst the violence.
"It’s extremely tragic to have to deal with this," Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert A. López said, fighting back tears at a Sunday news conference.
"Officer Riveros gave his life in service to others, a profound testament to his unyielding dedication to the community and the people he served."
Juan Ruvalcaba, a neighbor, described initially mistaking the gunfire for firecrackers and expressed gratitude for his own safety saying, 'Thank God that I'm still here.'
