Tom Pidcock has spoken against UCI's new safety regulations aimed at limiting bike speeds. These include restrictions on gear ratios, adjustments to handlebar width, and wheel depth regulations. Pidcock argues that limiting gear ratios will increase dangers by drawing competitors closer together at high speeds, particularly during descents. He criticizes the focus on handlebar width as missing crucial issues in cycling safety. Pidcock humorously suggested that the UCI's next step could be capping carbohydrate intake for riders.
Limiting gears will only make everything more dangerous. If we're all going at the same top speed, we'll be closer together, and on descents, that means we'll take up more of the road.
The debate about handlebar width also seems like a smokescreen to me. We need to talk about the important issues.
I told my brother that if we continue like this, they should limit carbs for everyone.
The UCI confirmed the new limit would be trialled in a test stage race later in the 2025 season, but it has already been met with consternation from industry experts.
