BMX is one of the more affordable disciplines out there. One reason for this is that there is a range of bikes that perform well.
Though serious racers might find the nicer bike worth it, many will be perfectly suited by a more affordable bike.
Unfortunately, the expensive parts of a mountain bike like suspension and shifting suffer extreme performance downgrades on the more affordable options.
One thing that is clear is if riders want to save money on gear, BMX is an affordable option.
