Sam Welsford has showcased his sprinting skills by winning back-to-back stages at the Santos Tour Down Under, but anticipates tough competition ahead as the race shifts focus to general classification (GC) riders. With a tight leaderboard featuring many contenders just seconds apart, Welsford knows the upcoming third stage, which features challenging climbs including the Knott’s Hill, is pivotal. Both Welsford and teammate Finn Fisher-Black acknowledge the intensity of this stage, potentially rivaling the traditionally significant Willunga climb, which has historically affected GC outcomes.
Coming in, I was still thinking Willunga was the main stage, but after reconning the third stage, I think it might be the most important.
You know, I think for GC, this is the big shakedown.
The challenge it poses seems to be bigger in reality than on paper.
This year, however, it looks like the climb that is synonymous with the Tour Down Under will have to share the limelight.
