Stage five promises a challenging race with a long 200km route through hilly terrain, culminating in a steep final climb of 1.7km averaging 10.8%. Although many riders are out of contention for the general classification, there’s an opportunity for breakaways to succeed on this difficult stage. The weather remains cold, adding an element of difficulty as riders attempt to conquer climbs, including an early category three ascent. On such a hilly route, and with so many riders now out of GC contention, you sense this could be a day for the breakaway to succeed.
The final climb to the finish lasts 1.7km, and averages a brutal 10.8%. It's a 'wall' in a similar vein to the Mur de Huy.
