The 2025 Tour de France saw significant crashes during its first week, particularly affecting sprinters like Jasper Philipsen. Philipsen crashed into Bryan Coquard during an intermediate sprint, resulting in a broken collarbone and rib, ending his Tour early. Other riders, like Stefan Bissegger and Filippo Ganna, also abandoned the race due to crashes. The first week is viewed as particularly dangerous due to cyclists pushing for speed and history. There are seven flat stages in this year's event, intensifying the pressure for sprinters aiming to perform before the race becomes focused on endurance later.
The first week of the Tour de France almost never goes by without serious crashes and on the third stage of the 2025 Tour, Belgian Jasper Philipsen, who was wearing the green jersey, was hit.
Frenchman Bryan Coquard skidded at around 60 km/h during an intermediate sprint, and Philipsen, who was riding next to him, was unable to avoid him and crashed onto the asphalt.
The first week is probably the most dangerous, because everyone thinks they can make cycling history. In the second or third week, everyone knows where they belong.
There are a total of seven flat stages in this year's Tour de France, and most of them are in the first week. That adds to the pressure.
