Stage 5 of Paris-Nice presents a vital opportunity for sprinters, and veteran Michael Matthews is gearing up for Milan-San Remo. With a history of near misses, including a second-place finish last year, Matthews aims to replicate his previous successful preparation. He acknowledges his current good form but emphasizes the need for competitive rhythm. Although focusing on team support in Paris-Nice, he remains hopeful for success in San Remo, reflecting on the balance of training and competition to fulfill his long-term goal of victory.
After a good winter of training, Matthews already performed well in the stage 3 team time trial where he helped Jayco AIUIa leader Ben O'Connor and the team come home in second place.
My form is good. The first stages didn't really go according to plan, but those were sprinter stages. It wasn't my goal to do something there myself.
If I can continue like this, I hope I will be in top form in two weeks.
I don't know, I haven't done it yet. I'll keep trying and hopefully my hard work and sacrifices will pay off.
