Greg Minnaar Opens Up About ADHD and Mental Health in MTB
"For many of us who are deeply rooted in the world of mountain biking, there's a certain draw to this kind of activity-one that is lost on much of the, quote unquote, "normal world." The adrenaline-fueled rush of ripping down a trail feels natural, the obsession over our bikes feels logical, and the unending pursuit of the perfect run, perfect trail, and perfect moment is part of what keeps many of us coming back for more"
"While it's tempting for many non-mountain bikers to look at the sport we love and begin to question our collective sanity, maybe we should take a deeper look at the possibility of neurodivergence before we start calling people "crazy." For downhill legend Greg Minnaar, neurodivergence was a complicated piece of his personal puzzle-one he opens up about in the latest episode of his ongoing video series The Other Side of the Hill."
Many mountain bikers experience an adrenaline-fueled rush from ripping down trails, obsessive attention to bikes, and pursuit of perfect runs that sustains ongoing engagement. Neurodivergence, such as ADHD, can underlie intense involvement and should be considered before dismissing riders as 'crazy.' Greg Minnaar, a South African downhill legend with four World Championship titles and 22 career victories, retired recently and became Norco Race Division Team Director. At 43, after initially seeking help for depression and daily-life struggles, Minnaar was diagnosed with ADHD and began medication trials that markedly changed his experience.
