Garmin is being sued by Strava and Suunto for alleged patent infringement related to segments, leaderboards, and watch features. Strava alleges that Garmin violated a 2015 licensing agreement after Garmin launched Connect+, a paid tier of its Connect platform, and began offering Garmin-branded segments and leaderboards alongside Strava-branded Live Segments. Suunto alleges that several Garmin fitness watches infringe on five Suunto patents. Garmin announced new developer guidelines on July 1 that affect API partners. Strava's Chief Product Officer Matt Salazar posted on r/Strava explaining background and noting the new guidelines prompted recent actions.
