For a Better Workout, Walk With Hiking Poles
Briefly

Ashley Hawke, once a skeptic of trekking poles, changed her perspective after an ankle injury during a hike in 2015. She discovered that using poles significantly eased her hiking experience, especially with a heavy pack. As a Ph.D. candidate in integrative physiology, she conducted a meta-analysis showing that while research on trekking poles is limited, findings consistently indicate benefits including improved balance, reduced strain on the legs, and less muscle soreness. Studies suggest that poles can also provide joint relief and enhance cardiovascular benefits, making them advantageous for all hikers, not just seniors or long-distance trekkers.

Using trekking poles often improved balance, took weight off the legs, made hiking feel easier and led to fewer sore muscles.
