Fem van Empel, competing in the Trofeo Alfredo Binda Women's WorldTour race, narrowly escaped a potentially serious collision with a spectator crossing the road. While she managed to avoid the incident, fellow rider Thalita de Jong was not so fortunate, sustaining a broken collarbone. De Jong expressed gratitude for Van Empel's concern. Despite the mishap, Elisa Balsamo captured victory in the race, her third in the event, following a thrilling final sprint against competitors Blanka Vas and Cat Ferguson.
There was a man crossing the road on the descent ahead of me, could just avoid it, but there were a couple of girls that crashed really badly... This is part of cycling, but the way this happened I cannot understand.
Thank you so much Fem for your care of me.
In the end, it was Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) who came out on top at the race, the Italian triumphing for the third time in her career.
De Jong appears to have come off the worst in the incident. She’s set to be ruled out of racing for several weeks as a result.
