Lachlan Morton, a renowned ultra-endurance cyclist, recently shattered the long-standing Auckland-Wellington cycling record, completing the 648km journey in just 18.5 hours. Inspired by a conversation about the record set by Brian Fleck in 1983, Morton embarked on this challenge not only to see if he could surpass the time but also to honor Fleck's earlier achievement. Morton's ride highlights not only his personal ambition but also the historical significance of the feat, which, despite being a local legend, deserves to be recognized on a larger international stage.
This was a ride that was bigger than local folklore, it was a ride that should have been known internationally.
One it was interesting to see if I could do it quicker, but the main reason was to celebrate the ride he'd done all those years before.
