Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has won the design competition for the new Hungarian Natural History Museum in Debrecen, intended to replace the existing facility in Budapest. The innovative design features a series of overlapping landscaped ribbons that rise from the Great Forest, creating a harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor experiences. The museum aims to serve as a community hub and educational center, aligned with governmental goals to enhance Debrecen's cultural landscape by 2030. The building uses sustainable materials, including locally sourced charred wood, engaging visitors through winding paths and vibrant public areas.
The design is conceived as an intersection of paths and lineages, with overlapping ribbons of landscape that create a blend of intimacy and scale.
The museum's structure, made of locally sourced charred wood, partially sinks into the terrain, creating a seamless connection with the Great Forest.
Located in Debrecen, the museum aims to transform the city into a regional center for education and culture by 2030.
Visitors will approach the museum through winding paths, with a vibrant entrance plaza that serves as a hub for community events.
