The 13th Berlin Biennale, set to open on June 13th at various venues, will showcase over 60 artists and more than 170 works. Curator Zasha Colah, alongside Valentina Viviani, introduces this year's theme, "passing the fugitive on," focusing on art's role in confronting systemic injustices. The Biennale explores ideas of fugitivity through various art forms, including performances and readings, aimed at fostering a connection between the audience and the artworks, embodying a sense of 'restorative laughter' in a context of ongoing societal struggles.
...art's ability to define its own laws in the face of lawful violence in unjust systems...sending messages that can be passed on.
...artworks that assume different kinds of transmissibility, especially those that engage the body and orality.
Colah highlights works that speak directly-including...tribunals, commemorative walks and stand-up comedy.
the urgency of highlighting these kinds of works in Berlin today and the importance, in her curatorial practice, of 'restorative laughter'.
