Gaza food shortage 'critical' amid closure of WFP bakeries, UN says
Briefly

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has dramatically worsened following Israel's closure of all crossings for a month, leading to severe food shortages. The World Food Programme announced the closure of its remaining bakeries due to dwindling supplies, emphasizing the critical lack of wheat flour and cooking oil. UN agencies are alarmed at the impending rise in hunger and malnutrition, refuting claims by Israeli authorities that ample supplies are available. In a particularly distressing account, a father highlighted the dire circumstances his family faces without adequate food.
The UN agency said that due to the lack of humanitarian aid, its supplies are running out and it doesn't have enough wheat flour needed to make bread.
Aid workers have stretched supplies, but warn of a catastrophic surge in severe hunger and malnutrition.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the assertion was "ridiculous," calling the food shortage very critical. The organisation is "at the tail end of our supplies" and a lack of flour and cooking oil are forcing the bakeries to close.
Mohammed al-Kurd, a father of 12, said his children go to bed without dinner. "We tell them to be patient and that we will bring flour in the morning."
