Amid Rising Costs, Restaurateurs Increasingly Turn to DIY Design
Briefly

Brandon Hoy, a restaurateur, turned a plumbing issue into an opportunity by repurposing old pipes into restaurant furniture, marking the start of his DIY journey. Hoy continuously finds inventive, cost-saving alternatives for design, such as using outdoor fixtures for lighting and inexpensive materials for decorative elements. With rising operational costs making it hard for independent restaurants to thrive, innovative design hacks have become essential. Experts note that effective budgeting and creativity in design can help restaurants survive financial pressures while fostering unique and memorable dining experiences.
"The longer you are in this business, the more thrifty you become," said Hoy, reflecting on how he repurposed his plumber's abandoned pipes into restaurant furniture.
"It's cheap, but it's fire-rated," he said. "All in it cost me $300, whereas if I went with custom drapery it would have been $3000."
"Dipping into any cash reserves set aside for working capital before you've even opened your doors can really hurt your chances of survival," said Elise Rosenberg.
Design hacks are helping restaurateurs cut costs, often resulting in one-of-a-kind details, especially amidst rising operational expenses.
