Indian writer Roy pulls out of Berlin Film Festival amid Gaza row
"With deep regret, I must say that I will not be attending the Berlinale,"
"To hear them say that art should not be political is jaw-dropping,"
"We cannot really enter the field of politics"
"a genocide of the Palestinian people by the State of Israel"
Arundhati Roy withdrew from the Berlin Film Festival in protest after jury president Wim Wenders indicated a desire to 'stay out of politics' when questioned about Gaza. Roy described Wenders's response as 'shocked and disgusted' and called his and other jury members' statements 'unconscionable.' Roy had been announced to present a restored 1989 film she wrote and starred in but cancelled attendance with 'deep regret.' Wenders framed filmmakers as 'the counterweight to politics' and said the jury 'cannot really enter the field of politics.' Roy described Israel's actions in Gaza as 'a genocide of the Palestinian people by the State of Israel' and warned that history will judge silence.
