How a Carshalton local became a cult favourite and treasured community pub
Briefly

The Hope, a pub in Carshalton, has evolved into a beloved local landmark, primarily due to its grassroots ownership model and community support. With 46 local shareholders and a dedicated staff, its preservation was pivotal when it faced closure in 2009. Rodger Molyneux, a key figure, shares how they negotiated a 20-year lease to maintain it as a pub rather than a restaurant. The venue boasts a diverse beer selection and facilities expansion, highlighting its commitment to quality and community engagement.
Rodger Molyneux, licensee and part of the founding group, first got involved when the pub was under threat in 2009. The pub had been shut for a couple of years.
At the time, it was in poor shape and facing closure. Fortunately, I knew someone who could get our proposal in front of the Punch Taverns board.
That growth has been steady and considered. A basement cold room now supports the ever-expanding beer list. The garden marquee is set for a permanent structure.
The Hope has become something of a local legend, known not only for its beer, but also for its independence and atmosphere that's increasingly rare in London.
