Tom Bischof was considered a contender for Germany’s World Cup team but did not receive a call-up. He often played at Bayern Munich in a different position than the one needed for Germany, and he appeared in only about 30% of possible minutes. Germany’s head coach said Bischof was incredibly close and that his future includes more playing time and major tournaments. The coach noted strong competition for Bischof’s position and that other talented players were not selected for various reasons. Bischof reacted with sadness and frustration but responded well. He still won a Bundesliga title and could win the DFB-Pokal this weekend.
"“He often played at Bayern in a different position to the one we need him here. I told him he was really close. We discussed his name until the last moment. I think he played just 30% of possible minutes, he will certainly play more in the future. He will also play major tournaments for Germany in the future. I rate him highly. Of course, he was sad and frustrated, but he reacted well. He will have a big future,” Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia)."
"“We have many talented players who have what it takes to play in a World Cup. Be it Said (El Mala), Assan (Ouédraogo), or Tom. We didn't call them up for various reasons. There's a lot of competition for Tom's position. I think the appearances he made have been good. But he hasn't played in many crucial matches. I told him he was incredibly close. I think very highly of him.”"
"If Bischof had stayed with Hoffenheim for one more season, would he have made the team? Probably. If he had made the move to another club aside of Bayern Munich where he played minutes in big games, would he have had a better chance? Almost certainly."
