Bayern Munich prez says club not overly concerned with Alphonso Davies at World Cup
Bayern Munich players are set to join national teams shortly after the DFB-Pokal final in Berlin. Alphonso Davies, a Canadian left back, has fitness concerns due to a hamstring injury late in the season. Earlier, he missed much of the season after a cruciate ligament tear suffered while playing for Canada at the CONCACAF Nations League in March 2025. The earlier decision to play him in the third-place match against the United States led to controversy between Bayern and the Canadian Soccer Federation. Bayern’s leadership says it will coordinate closely with Canada’s medical staff and manage Davies’ workload so he can prioritize health while still aiming to play in the World Cup.
"For left back Alphonso Davies, there's been a lot of question marks regarding his current health and fitness as the Canadian international has been dealing with a hamstring injury towards the end of Bayern's season. The most recent muscular injury has compounded the frustration of having missed most of the beginning of the season due to the cruciate ligament tear he suffered playing with Canada at the CONCACAF Nations League back in March of 2025."
"That injury sparked a lot of controversy between Bayern and the Canadian Soccer Federation as Davies really should not have played in the third place match against the United States, as playing him proved to be incredibly consequential and it's taken him quite some time to get back to fitness."
"Bayern's front office has said they don't want the Canadian federation to pressure Davies too heavily into risking his health and fitness to be in their World Cup squad, but club president Herbert Hainer recently said that they're not overly concerned with the matter. "There's no concern, because there is very close coordination between the medical departments of FC Bayern and Canada."
""Of course, he has a huge desire to play at the World Cup in his country. On the other hand, he also knows very well that he still has many years ahead of him, and that he must prioritize his health above everything else. But as I said, there's very close coordination between the medical departments, and they will handle it properly," Hainer explained to Bild (via @iMiaSanMia)."
