A Spanish court has overturned the conviction of former soccer player Dani Alves for sexual assault, citing inconsistencies in the evidence presented during his trial. Initially sentenced to four years and six months for rape, the court found the alleged victim's testimony lacked credibility, particularly in relation to facts that could be verified by video footage. This ruling underscores the importance of the presumption of innocence and follows Alves' release from prison pending appeal, with his lawyer affirming that justice has been served.
"Dani Alves is very happy. He is innocent, that is demonstrated. Justice has spoken," Ines Guardiola, Alves' lawyer, told RAC1 radio.
The inadequacies of the evidence lead to the conclusion that the standard required by the presumption of innocence has not been met, noting a series of gaps and inconsistencies.
