"The iconic Sagrada Familia in Barcelona has reached a major milestone, officially becoming the tallest church in the world. The basilica, a term used for large or specially honoured churches in the Catholic tradition, now stands at 162.91 metres, just overtaking Germany's Ulm Minster, which held the record for more than a century. When finished, the central Tower of Jesus Christ will rise to 172 metres, about the height of a 50-storey building."
"The latest stage of construction saw workers place a 7.25-metre steel cross on top of the new tower. The cross weighs 24 tonnes and marks the start of the final stage of building. Work on the Sagrada Familia began in 1882. The original architect, Francisco de Paula del Villar, soon stepped aside and Antoni Gaudí took over the project a year later. Gaudí spent more than 40 years working on the basilica and dedicated the last 15 years of his life entirely to it."
Sagrada Familia in Barcelona now measures 162.91 metres, surpassing Ulm Minster to become the tallest church worldwide. Workers placed a 7.25-metre, 24-tonne steel cross on the new tower, marking the start of the final construction stage. When complete, the central Tower of Jesus Christ will reach 172 metres, providing a new viewpoint across the city. Construction began in 1882 and Antoni Gaudí led the project from 1883, dedicating decades before his death in 1926. Gaudí's design calls for 18 towers representing biblical figures. Building slowed during the Spanish Civil War and continued via donations and ticket revenue. The basilica attracts millions of visitors annually and defines Barcelona's skyline.
