Vibrant tapas bars and outdoor festivals in Spain create a loud atmosphere that locals find increasingly disruptive. Spanish writer Ignacio Peyro noted the cultural difference regarding noise levels. In cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia, high noise levels make it difficult for residents to sleep, especially during summer. Many locals feel that the essential right to rest is overlooked in favor of leisure activities, as expressed by Yomara Garcia, president of Jurists Against Noise. This tension highlights the conflict between cultural celebration and individual peace in urban areas.
"The only thing that makes us different from other countries is that we are noisier," Spanish writer Ignacio Peyro wrote recently in daily newspaper El Pais.
"If you sleep light, it's impossible," the 58-year-old hairdresser told AFP, saying he dreamed of moving 'when I can, which will be soon'.
"The right to personal privacy, the inviolability of the home, commonly called the right to rest... is a right that takes precedence" over "the misnomer right to leisure."
