Catalonia's state-owned fibre backbone has reached 7,454 kilometers, connecting 684 municipalities and covering 72 percent of the region. Since August 2024, the network expanded by 1,433 km and added 131 municipalities. The government plans to increase coverage to 8,000 km and 739 municipalities by 2025, with a budget of €91.5 million dedicated to achieving universal access. The initiative aims to provide equitable access to digital services for all communities, including schools and hospitals, and has been shown to generate significant social value from each invested euro.
